They're back and their more dynamic than ever. This album
still maintains the same attributes that made Flyleaf’s first album a success
with something new to offer. It has more riffs, better production quality and a
new message. The phrase “memento mori”
is a Latin phrase that means “remember
you will die”. It’s a message reminding us that we are all mortal, thus all
equal regardless of whether we are “peasants” or “kings”.
Having been a long time fan of Sonata
Arctica, I can say that their new album has something new to offer. There have
been many questions about where the band would go after the loss of the highly
respected Jani Liimatainen. Elias Viljanen had big shoes to fill and it’s clear
that he filled the position well.
“Finally,
it’s about time we’ve heard some real thrash!” were the words that came out of
my mouth after hearing a few tracks from their self-entitled EP. The has a
sound that’s true to thrash, yet the approach is fresh enough to where you don’t
feel like you’ve heard the entire album after only hearing one song. It’s got
highly calculated crushing rhythms and hell fire lead riffs and intellegent
lyrics.
